The heading of my post is the same as the title of a famous work by William Blake. In it he argues that man is the source of religion and that it is his imagination that brings forth the concept of religion. All these dawned on me while reading Dan Brown’s recent mystery novel, “Origin”. The book is the 5th installment of the famous Robert Langdon series. This book explores the concept of various religions and the 2 most important questions of our existence.
1. Where did we come from?
2. Where are we going?
I don’t want to spoil the thrill of reading for the readers. So I will just talk about my point of view into the matter.
One of my very open view is that religion was a man made illusion that was used to cover up the unknown. For example, lets say Ebola virus infection appeared back in the 10th century. The scientific development at that time was not sufficient to investigate the infection or the cause. Therefore, it automatically became a plague sent by God. Anyone smart enough to look for the science behind it was condemned and punished as being a heretic. Some of the famous condemned scientist where, Galileo, Copernicus and etc. But with the advancement in science, the reason behind everything is investigated and a solution is presented. Even if there isn’t a complete solution, there is a possibility of at least reaching a mid way point. Due to this fact, the world is seeing a rapid rise in atheists around the world. That does not mean the concept of religion is totally absurd. For example, the hindu religion had a smart way of incorporating religion with science. The religion is obsessed with turmeric powder and it is almost used every where from funeral houses to weddings. The scientific reason behind is the anti-bacterial properties of turmeric. People back then would not have followed anything if a person spoke about science and higyene but would bend over for religion. So the pundits of the time used religion as a cover for science. Even in the current world, there are thousands of people who have a blind faith on religion which is becoming dangerous day by day.
The primary goal of any religion was peace and prosperity but the current world is shred into pieces because of religion and the fight to show which belief is powerful. Religion which was suppose to bring order from chaos forgot its purpose and turned right back creating chaos from order.
So back to the book, the 2 prominent questions are the most intriguing of many questions about the universe. According to the protognist and myself, we are nothing but a tiny speck of dust in a huge universe. We are not significant as we think ourselves to be. As I had mentioned once in my earlier posts, we are only the current dominant species on earth. There were many before us and many after us. The book has a very interesting suggestion about our successor which seems highly likely with the current world. I do not want to get into details but the synopsis is that we are nothing special and we will not be special. Religion is just the imagination used to cover up our fear of the unknown. It is time the world breaks free of this millennia old concept of religion and unite under science.
To know the interesting answers to the above questions I suggest you read the book.
The dark religions are departed and sweet science reigns.
